What steps can I take to improve my chances of getting hired?

Successful applicants have set themselves apart from other applicants by doing some or all the following:

Obtaining an associate degree or higher. This does not necessarily need to be in criminal justice. Some of our officers have degrees in communication, psychology and other various studies.
Gaining experienced military training. We support our veterans and are proud of their service to our country. We value the training they have already received especially in the areas of service, leadership and teamwork.
Gaining experience in the field of law enforcement or criminal justice. We have numerous staff who started volunteering as a cadet or reserve officer or who worked full-time in a different position, such as records or evidence. Having this experience is extremely beneficial.

How long before I can become a detective, K9 handler, or other specialty position?

Do I register myself for the Academy or take the National Testing Network before I can apply?

The Basic Police Academy is only available to candidates who have been hired by an Oregon Law Enforcement agency. It is held at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) in Salem, Oregon. This academy is approximately 640 hours, typically Monday through Friday and 16 weeks in length. Those attending the academy have the option to stay at the facility free of charge in a dorm-style room. If you live out of the area, you have the option to travel home on the weekends.

You do not need to take the National Testing Network test before you apply. The Bend Police Department will sponsor and pay for your test if you are selected to advance in the interview process.
