The Bend Police Department Reserve and Cadet programs provide supplemental personnel for routine police department activities, broaden the capabilities of the department to handle unusual events and emergencies, enhance public service, and garner citizen support and understanding of the police function through citizen involvement.

Basic Qualifications For Reserves

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of initial testing
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have a valid driver's license

Basic Qualifications for Cadets

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be at least 14 years of age at the time of initial testing
  • Must carry at least a 2.5 GPA


The following will disqualify you from being hired as a Bend Reserve or Cadet Officer:
  • Felony conviction
  • Misdemeanor conviction for:
    • Domestic violence (DV);
    • Crime of dishonesty; and/or,
    • Crime that resulted in serious physical injury to another. 
  • Illegal manufacture, transport, or sale of a controlled substance.

Central Oregon Reserve Academy

Reserve officers attend a 10 month Central Oregon Reserve Academy to meet state and Bend Police Department standards. The Central Oregon Reserve Academy includes classroom and skills training in a wide variety of topics including:
  • Municipal and State Law;
  • Criminal Procedures;
  • Investigations;
  • Certification in CPR, defensive tactics, hazardous materials, vehicle operations, report writing, evidence collections and crime scene processing techniques, etc…,and;
  • Extensive firearms training to include qualifications with handgun, shotgun, and rifle.

After graduation from the Central Oregon Reserve Academy, new reserve officers are assigned to a reserve advisor and are required to attend monthly meetings and training sessions.
Reserve officers also assist regular department personnel in the completion of their duties. Reserve officers ride with regular, full-time, police officers to provide additional assistance and to learn more about the duties and responsibilities of a Bend Police Officer.

Reserve officers also provide an increased law enforcement presence at special events, high school football games, and other community activities. Reserve officers are paid Bend Police Department employees at these special events and activities.
