Ten Easy Tips to Save and Protect Our Water
1. Conserve Drinking Water
Many restaurants only serve water to customers upon request. If this is your restaurant, bravo!
2. Wash Veggies and Fruits in a Bowl
Use low-flow pre-rinse spray valve to rinse veggies and fruit, when necessary, or use a basin or large bowl.
3. Keep Faucets Off When Not in Use
Avoid waste—turn off faucets when finished!
4. Scrape Food Waste and Grease into Trash
Help prevent clogged pipes and protect our water systems by scraping food scraps and grease into the trash instead of rinsing them down the drain.. Pre-rinse only after scraping, using low flow pre-rinse spray valves. Dispose of food in compost bin or trash can.
5. Maintain Grease Traps
Keep grease traps and interceptors maintained and on a regular cleaning schedule.
6. Pour Oil into Secure Containers with Lids
Pouring oil down the drain causes clogs and pollutes water systems. Always use a secure, lidded container for disposal to keep plumbing clear and protect the environment.
NEVER wash spills into the storm drain.
7. Clean Floor Mats and Hood Filters Inside
Don’t dump wash water outside—always use a utility sink or floor drain.
Remember, Only Rain in the Storm Drain.
8. Clean Around Outside Trash Bins Daily
Soak up spills. Always secure lids and sweep around outside trash bins. Keep spills and trash out of the storm drain.
9. Know Your Irrigation Controls
Keep sprinkler spray off sidewalks and streets. Know how to turn off your irrigation sprinklers in case of leaks.
10. Schedule Annual Backflow Testing
Schedule annual backflow testing with a State-certified tester to make sure harmful substances do not get syphoned back into your business.
