What snow removal responsibilities do residents and businesses have?
The City code requires that sidewalks be cleared of all snow no later than six hours after the snowfall. Following these requirements will ensure that the Bend community can access sidewalks and bus stops during the winter months. Detailed information is available at Snow and Ice Control.
When does the City spread gravel?
If there is ice build-up, gravel can provide additional traction. Gravel is used primarily at intersections, on hills and along bends.
When does the City plow residential streets?
When six inches of snow have fallen, Public Works may call contractors to plow the residential streets.
When does the City apply chemical de-icer?
If ice is forecasted, City crews will apply magnesium chloride (the de-icing formula) before the roads ice over. De-icer is used to break up the ice. If the temperature drops below 20 degrees, de-icer becomes less effective because the water simply freezes. More information is available at Snow and Ice Control.
When does the City plow snow on streets?
When two inches of snow have fallen, Public Works may plow the main roads, as well as trouble spots (i.e. steep slopes, etc.) Information on plowing of residential streets is available at Snow and Ice Control.
